Services on building microbiology

Moisture problems are very common in Finnish buildings. Examination of  indoor air and building materials may help to find out whether the building is damp or damaged. Many of the microbes that grow in moist environments may cause different irritation symptoms and even allergies to residents and workers. Public health officers contribute most of the samples  analysed at the Unit.

Indoor air sampling is recommended when occupants experience symptoms which are thought to be caused by mould problems. Analysis of material samples gives useful information when planning the renovations. A majority of all examinations comprise a qualitative analysis of mould and yeast groups and genera.  It is also possible to quantitate microbial colony forming units per unit weight in building materials.
